As the title says, 'The Modern Times' gives picture of modern era negatively. The film is produced, directed, written and starting by Charlie Chaplin, released in 1936.
Genre of the film is satirical comedy. Chaplin has successfully picturised real situations of the age with comedy. Modern era was time of industrialisation, of machinery and because of this so many people were jobless and so poverty was so much. Which called the great depression.
From the first scene, Chaplin starts to give his idea that human life has became mechanical. Chaplin appears as factory worker. Factory owner keeps watch on everyone and controls them. Even after work Chaplin remains in a state that he fit the bolts everywhere. This suggests that man's life has become so much mechanical that he forgets real life.
He loses his job for misbehaviour and sends to jail. After that his journey of meeting poor girl, finding and losing job, going to jail, their dreams, their struggles continues till the end.
The film ends with this scene, suggesting that life is journey full of difficulties. but going on with hope that one day dreams will come true, that is the life.
So the film gives beautiful message also. The film is very good source to understand time of great depression and of course also for good laugh.
