Digdarshak Hindi play review

It was 8th August, 2017 when we watched this amazing play in our department of English.

The screening of the play was conducted by department's film screening committee.

This amazing play is written by Priyam Jani and directed by Rishit Jhaveri.

The play started with a young film actor who had came to his guru, who is now old. When I came to know that the man is playing role of old digdarsak, I felt surprised. Because he was not looking old aged. I thought why they didn't do make up and made him looking old aged but soon I found my answer when it went in flashback. The same actors played roles of their past and this present and flashback technique goes till the end of the play. Only two actors we see from beginning to end who changes their roles and this makes the play more interesting. Sometimes we think that for a good play, lots of actors, music, costume and props requires, but in this play only two actors, less music, same costume and they completes whole play very effectively. It was really new thing to me which I had never imagined.

Now the story of the play is about life, thoughts, emotions and dedication of a director of the theatre, as the title says. In the first scene old digdarsak was practicing on stage and when he coughs, one young man gives him water. After their talk they take us into flashback. The young man had come from village to be successful in acting. The digdarsak tests him and decided to teach him acting. He teaches him faithfully. From that we also learn many important things about theatre. But suddenly young man decided to leave theatre and wanted to go in films which digdarsak doesn't like at all. For him theatre was far better from cinema. In their conversation many times they debate for theatre vs. cinema which becomes it's one of the major themes.

In the end it resolves why young man had to leave theatre. Digdarsak's son had told young man to leave his father that his father give importance to him. Digdarsak was so dedicated to the stage that he gave two lakh rupees to young actor that his father recover from illness and young actor can focus on acting. Soon was in despair. He says young man I want my father. This art Vs family life also becomes important theme of the play. Digdarsak had never been paid attention to his family. In the end when he knows the truth, he realizes that he should have importance to his son and family. This suggests that the real artist is that who can maintain their family life and professional life.

The play ends with digdarsak giving script for reading and young man still making mistakes. This shows learning never end. There is lot more to learn.

So, the play has many interesting themes and it also gives knowledge of theatre and about the people who are attached with it. So who are interested in dramas should watch it.

The Old Woman - Joseph Campbell

'The Old Woman' is simple and short poem by Joseph Campbell where he compares old woman with different things and describes her. The poem has three stanzas. .In  the first stanza , the poet compares the old lady with the white candle. White colour is symbol of peace and candle is symbol of light. The old woman is like white candle. She is in peace and she gives other people light by his experiences. She is able to show right path who need that. In the second  stanza, the poet compares the old lady with the spent radiance of the winter's sun. It refers old woman's long life. Poet writes, "A woman with her travail done" In last stanza, the poet compares the old woman with the water under the ruined mill. The water is still under the ruined mill and by comparing this poet writes about the old lady that her all sons has gone, they do not live with her. But she has all the...

To the Indians who died in South Africa - T.S. Eliot

A man's destination is his own village,  His own fire, and his wife's cooking;  To sit in front of his own door at sunset  And see his grandson, and his neighbour's grandson  Playing in the dust together.  Scarred but secure, he has many memories  Which return at the hour of conversation,  (The warm or the cool hour, according to the climate)  Of foreign men, who fought in foreign places,  Foreign to each other.  A man's destination is not his destiny,  Every country is home to one man  And exile to another. Where a man dies bravely  At one with his destiny, that soil is his.  Let his village remember.  This was not your land, or ours: but a village in the Midlands,  And one in the Five Rivers, may have the same graveyard.  Let those who go home tell the same story of you:  Of action with a common purpose, action  None the less fruitful if neither you nor we  Know, unt...

Joy and woe woven are fine - William Blake

In this short poem William Blake wants to give message that joy and grief, both are part of life and both are good. He says joy and woe are woven fine. Woven means things which are attached to each other. Both happiness and grief are fine. They are cloths of our soul. In every grief, there are also joy we need to find it. We are not here for only happiness or for only pain. But we are made for both. And when we know that joy and woe both are part of our life, we can live happily in grief also. So, in this poem poet wants to tell that accept both joy and pain. Do not become unhappy when sad moments come, there are always happy moments also. Know that both are part of everyone's life and live happily. That is all poet wants to say in the poem.
