ELT Videos summary

1] The well presented video with humor and drawing talks about Ken Robinson's idea of changing paradigm. Today purpose of education is cultural and economical. Parents wants their children to be rich and want to give them cultural identity. The education system of today is outdated because it was designed for different age. Parents want to make the future of children by what they did in the past. In this system people are separated into two groups - academic and non academic. academic are consider as smarter and non academic non smarter, which is a false idea. It is not the generation where one can get knowledge only in schools, today information can come from anywhere. Social media, internet, games etc. In the end Ken Robinson puts weight on divergent thinking and collaborative learning. Divergent thinking brings creativity.

So, in this video Robinson presents problems of education system and then gives some ideas o how it should be.

2] Thoughts of Sugata Mitra is very different than traditional teachers on education. He believes schools are not required in learning and technology is key to learning. The present education system has came from 300 years ago where they have to write on paper and so they required people with good handwriting and who can do multiplication. But in this world of technology we do not need those things. Then he tells about his experiment called hall in the wall. He fitted one computer in the wall and children of the slum who did not know anything, started browsing. He did this experiment at different places and result was same. By this he want to prove that how technology can help in learning. He also gives example of how computer can help in pronunciation. His point is learning should happen by its own and teacher's role is to just see and encourage. Finally he tells his wish of building a school in the cloud where future learning can happen.

3] Sugata Mitra gives ideas of future of learning. He asks why technology and internet are not allow in examination? From beginning of earth people use tools and machines and outside you have to use the things so why not in exam hall? Again he describes his hall in the wall experiment. He says that curriculum should be changed and internet should be there. He also gives example of how exams should be taken.

4] In beginning Salman Khan talks about his videos and how people responded. While learning from technology there are some advantages. In traditional classroom student understand topic or not, teacher change topic, while in technology student can repeat the topic until they understand that. In the end he gives his idea of global one world classroom where anyone from anywhere can teach and learn.

5] Today's generation is digital natives. It is the first generation who grew up with this much of technology and mostly digital tools. The previous generation which is not born in digital age but have to adapt digital tools those are digital immigrants. Digital tools have changed the language but who teach today are mostly digital immigrants. According to Prensky they use outdated language and it creates problems. Digital natives are fast in learning, they are multitasking, they have parallel thinking, they like graphics than text, they like instant feedback. On the other hand digital immigrants are not multitasking, they also think learning should not be fun, they do not do new things in teaching, Teaching can be possible with gaming. He gives example of pokemon game. Pokemon lovers can remember 151 names of pokemon with their names, abilities, moves, evolution. If teaching happen like gaming it would be easy to learn.

6] David Crystal starts by stating that technology always affects language. Printing press and newspapers changed English. Some devices like telephone, radio and television received wrong perception in beginning but nothing happened wrong. Same way internet and web tools are quite new and nobody knows where it would be in future. These tools influence the language in specific way. Specially texting short things and informal messaging. Some people believe that it is ruining English language but again David Crystal reminds of telephone and press and those inventions. There are always people who object when new technology come in to exist but we don't know what could be future of the new thing.

7] In today's age there are gap between language of students and teachers. Students are digital natives and they know current language, but teachers who are digital immigrants do not know certain words. Another thing is because of globalization, there is lots of varieties in English language. So teachers have to teach students to accept every accent and there should not be notion like there is only one correct English and everybody should speak in that way. Technology has made teacher's job easy than earlier and internet is very helpful in teaching and learning.

8] Technology and texting brought abbreviation in language. But it is only 10 percent other 90 percent language is standard English. In language the more one read and write, the more one can expertise it. And mobile and computer can be very useful for that. So Crystal says that the earlier mobile you got, the higher your literacy goes.

The Old Woman - Joseph Campbell

The old woman is like white candle. She is in peace and she gives other people light by his experiences. She is able to show right path who need that. In the second  stanza, the poet compares the old lady with the spent radiance of the winter's sun. It refers old woman's long life. To the Indians who died in South Africa - T.S. Eliot

A man's destination is his own village,  His own fire, and his wife's cooking;  To sit in front of his own door at sunset  And see his grandson, and his neighbour's grandson  Playing in the dust together.  Scarred but secure, he has many memories  Which return at the hour of conversation,  (The warm or the cool hour, according to the climate)  Of foreign men, who fought in foreign places,  Foreign to each other.  A man's destination is not his destiny,  Every country is home to one man  And exile to another. Where a man dies bravely  At one with his destiny, that soil is his.  Let his village remember.  This was not your land, or ours: but a village in the Midlands,  And one in the Five Rivers, may have the same graveyard.  Let those who go home tell the same story of you:  Of action with a common purpose, action  None the less fruitful if neither you nor we  Know, unt...

Joy and woe woven are fine - William Blake

In this short poem William Blake wants to give message that joy and grief, both are part of life and both are good. He says joy and woe are woven fine. Woven means things which are attached to each other. Both happiness and grief are fine. They are cloths of our soul. In every grief, there are also joy we need to find it. We are not here for only happiness or for only pain. But we are made for both. And when we know that joy and woe both are part of our life, we can live happily in grief also. So, in this poem poet wants to tell that accept both joy and pain. Do not become unhappy when sad moments come, there are always happy moments also. Know that both are part of everyone's life and live happily. That is all poet wants to say in the poem.
