'Tughlaq' is a play in thirteen scenes by Indian dramatist, actor, film director Girish Karnad. It is about life of 14th century ruler Delhi Mohammad Bin Tughlaq.
Tughlaq is considered one of the greatest ruler and one of the greatest failure also. His personality was puzzled. He took many big decisions and that lead him to disaster.
He takes decisions like shifting capital from Delhi to Daulatabad. It took many people's lives and corrupted officers like Aziz and Azam loot people. His other decisions like banish Namaz and after five years five time prayer a day otherwise people will be punished. He replaced gold and silver coins with copper coins but that also failed because new coins were very easy to copy and people made so much counterfeit coins. He increased taxes and became enemy of farmers. He had killed his father and brother. So he was very cruel. In the end of the play he understands his mistakes. Lonely and shattered from inside he prays to God.
So it is a play about a ruler who failed in his ideology.
